Captivating…..
Eric Murphy continues to enthrall with this third adventure about Harley and Will. The escapades in this new setting, while scuba diving, as well as the historical interplay add tension that keep the reader demanding to find out what happens.

I have read all three now. The Phantom’s Gold & The Dead Man’s Boot were great. The Bermuda Shipwreck also had me from start to finish. The mix of history, historical characters and fiction is exciting and pulls the reader along at a blistering pace. I found myself rooting for the “good guys” and wishing for unfortunate things to happen to the “bad guys” – a true sign I had been drawn into the story. Looking forward to the next one in the series.
Oooh! Delightful. Thank you Eric Murphy for a riveting and quick-moving, intriguing mystery about things that I’m now surer than ever happen more often that we think along these Nova Scotian shores. And with an actual historical character too. I mean, how often do we get to eavesdrop on conversations with “The Real McCoy”?
I have read both “The Phantom’s Gold” and “The Dead Man’s Boot”. I enjoyed both so much that I bought copies for a young boy of 12. Perfect!
The books are full of adventure, thrills and historical fact. They are fun and very educational at the same time, and not only for young people; I learned a lot! I look forward to reading the next books in the series.
Aside from the story and the characters and all sorts of other wonderful things about The Dead Man’s Boot there was something else I enjoyed about reading Eric’s latest instalment that took me awhile to figure out. Then it hit me! I remembered the sheer delight I had as a young boy consuming the umpteen volumes in The Hardy Boys series with a flashlight after “lights out”. Imagine if my parents had caught me reading 😉
WARNING: Eric Murphy writes books for young adults that are a “gateway” to a lifelong reading habit.
A page turner, with a plot that reels the reader in but isn’t revealed until the end. As a school librarian, I know The Deadman’s Boot will captivate young adults with its intensity as a great story, yet it can be light hearted with its occasional humour in the mix.
This book has everything-well developed characters, relevant social issues and timely ecological questions. This is an action packed story, a real page turner. Five stars!
Love the book The Dead Man’s Boot. I like how Will is close to the age of the readers so they can sort of relate to Will. It was so entertaining. The cover art is not bad also. Eric Murphy is such a brilliant writer. I would love to see the movie of there is ever a movie.TRYING TO WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK!!!
A rollicking good tale. It has lots of excitement and mystery, but also depth in the characters and their relationships. A well-written book that doesn’t talk down to its readers and includes a lot of interesting facts and sailing lore. Nice Nova Scotia colour too. I’m an adult but I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to young people, especially boys.
I read The Phantom’s Gold and enjoyed it immensely. It is a wonderful combination of adventure, action and Canadian/American history aimed at young readers. I can really see it as a movie particularly with all the action scenes on the sailboat and the phantom appearing and disappearing. The author’s knowledge of sailing is clearly evident and it all sounded very exciting. I know my grandsons will enjoy the story greatly.
The story builds to a great climax — an exciting boat race! My 11-year old nephew loved that chapter and when he finished the book, said he was looking forward to finding out what happens next for Will, his mom and Harley. Looking forward to the sequels!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book for all I am a grandmother, know nothing about sailing and it is purportedly written for the younger reader. (Originally downloaded, I enjoyed it enough to buy a hard copy for myself and as a gift for my daughter and her husband). The book is beautifully and straightforwardly written, drawing the reader along until totally immersed. An adventure story, a ghost story, a story of family values: I laughed out loud and I swallowed hard. I loved the characters (when I wasn’t consigning the ‘villain’ to the deep) but most of all I loved the relationships.
The sailing race finale surely ensures that this is movie material!
This is a book suitable for all ages. We need more like it.
